Well, a colleague just reminded me of one of my hobby horses I love to hate, the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program for Psychiatry administered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and driven by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). I’m fine in principle with the MOC, I just have never had any confidence in the way it has been implemented. I have ranted about this many times and if you want to read more about it you can visit the blue button menu on the home page entitled “Let’s Rap About the Maintenance of Certification.” See my latest post with video by American Psychiatric Association president John Oldham, MD at link, The American Board of Medical Specialties and Maintenance of Certification « The Practical Psychosomaticist: James Amos, M.D.
I’ve given a lot of thought to my subspeciality certification in Psychosomatic Medicine and whether it’s worthwhile to continue with MOC for it. I’m having my doubts. I wonder if other psychiatrists out there have doubts about whether to hang on to their subspecialty certifications. Therefore I created the poll above.
What do you think?
