The link above takes you to a 50 minute video of a presentation by Dean Debra A. Schwinn’s state of the college address for 2013, “Vision for the Future of the Carver College of Medicine. I think it’s inspiring, even if there are parts of it I find a little over my head as a roll-up-my-sleeves clinician.
Dean Schwinn is also a talented violinist, which I find interesting because I like listening to music. She played fiddle with a bluegrass band at the College of Wooster in Ohio (see link for more details, Music and medicine | Iowa Now – The University of Iowa). She has joined the University of Iowa Health Care Faculty-Staff Orchestra–she points out that she plays in the back of the first violin section. Sorry, I couldn’t find any YouTube videos of her performing–but she is the first woman to lead the Carver College of Medicine.
Anyway, her outlook for the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is encouraging, despite the difficult economic times for academic medical centers.
