PRS 14-02 Opposing MOC Adopted by Iowa Medical Society Policy Forum

Well, I just found out the good news from the Deputy Executive Vice President, Administration of the Iowa Medical Society. My Iowa Medical Society Policy (IMS) Request Statement PRS 14-02 opposing MOC was accepted yesterday, September 25, 2014 by the Policy Forum with one amendment which was not material to the main issue and now reads:

The Iowa Medical Society opposes mandatory Maintenance of Certification (MOC) for licensure, hospital privileges, and reimbursement from third party payers. IMS supports continuing medical education and the principle of lifelong learning by physicians.

The Policy Forum actions will be shared with the full IMS membership next week. This policy is very similar in all important respects to the resolution recently passed by the South Carolina Medical Association.

Remember that fire truck floral arrangement from yesterday’s post? I strolled over to the gift shop today. I guess you could call it the Nigella Award, on this occasion in honor of the voting members of the first IMS Policy Forum for helping the effort to put out the fire of the MOC, at least in Iowa. But the support for lifelong learning? We’re still on fire.
