I get two lectures to give the first and second year residents and it’s always a challenge to decide what to talk about. The field is vast. One resource is:
- Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine for Psychosomatic Medicine curriculum for Psychiatry Residency Programs.
I always point the trainees to the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM), which puts on a great annual meeting, this year in New Orleans, to which I’m planning to go after a 3 year hiatus.
The picture on the first slide is a string of pearls, which was the title of a presentation several years ago at an APM meeting in which several seasoned consult psychiatrists delivered their own pearls to the audience. Pearls are nuggets of wisdom, not just facts and figures. They’re the concentrated kernels of hard-won insight on how to do the right thing over which the nacreous layers of how to do the thing right are wrapped.
